Indications for use

Neostigmine is an anticholinesterase agent. It binds to certain sites on the cholinesterase molecule and prevents it from acting on acetylcholine.
In the intestinal tract, it causes smooth muscle contraction, thereby increasing peristaltic movements (10–30 minutes after parenteral administration) as well as secretions.
In the respiratory system, it causes contraction of the bronchial smooth muscle, increased ciliary activity and increased bronchial secretions.
In the urinary system, it causes contraction of the smooth muscle of the bladder.
On skeletal muscle, it has an anticholinergic effect.
